So, I’ve been waiting. And waiting. And yes, waiting for Netflix to become available on the Android platform but as you may have already guessed it is still not going to be available until sometime next year. The reason? Security. According to Netflix the studios are the ones who are holding up the release of Netflix for Android due to DRM concerns. iPhone and Windows 7 already offer this service because they are closed systems and thus more secure? Android is an open platform and this makes it a risk for the studios? Politics man, just politics. It would be nice to see Netflix roll out onto the Android market but for now I’ll continue to wait. And wait.

In the meantime, check out these videos and tell me what you think: Cutting Edge, If By Cutting Edge You Mean A Butter Knife

As an Android user I know that this is something I am waiting for impatiently, Netflix on an Android phone. Rumor has it that there was even a job listing on the Netflix site for an “Android Video Playback Expert” under Partner Product Development. I have not verified this myself but it seems to make sense that Netflix would want to jump on board the Android bandwagon. Until then I keep my eyes peeled for any news regarding this topic.

A Personal Review

Oh joy, a new toy. I finally qualified for an upgrade with T-Mobile and it is was a toss up between the newest BlackBerry or going with an Android phone. After much research and deliberation I decided upon the fabulous myTouch 3G with the 3.5mm jack.

I can tell you that I have always enjoyed the BlackBerry’s because they have a real QWERTY keyboard and I have resisted moving to any smartphone with an Onscreen Keyboard because I have fat fingers. And to get it out of the way this is my only gripe about the myTouch 3G. I am having to relearn how to type on the OSK but after two days of practice I am getting much better.

Early on in my research I was getting a bit discouraged about switching to the Android OS because I had heard quite a bit of chatter regarding the fact that Android phones were a bit sluggish but so far I have not experienced any issues with the myTouch 3G, in fact it has been quite snappy and it has not crashed or locked up on me like my old BlackBerry Curve. The Android Market has a plethora of free apps to keep me occupied but to date all I am running is Facebook, Seismic and FxCamera. Oh and the WordPress app, of course. Additionally, I am quite taken with the GPS integration with Google Maps and Google Sky Map. Another plus has been the fact that the myTouch 3G seems to offer me better reception in the Portland metro area than did my Blackberry.

I’m not going to get all techie and geeky with this personal review of the myTouch 3G because I think the design and features speak for themselves and the layout is pretty intuitive so most users will be able to figure things out themselves. Overall, after two days of using it I am super pleased with the myTouch 3G!

That’s an interesting title considering that I biked into work today and it didn’t rain a drop and then when I left work this evening it was also not raining. I think I chose the title because at the moment it is in fact, raining. My back is to the window but I can hear the rain falling outside. Also, I do not feel as though it is an entirely misleading post title because I ride my bike year around and have pedaled in more than my share of extremely cold, wet days. Perhaps I am being prophetic and I know that tomorrow morning I will be riding my bike to work in full rain gear. Or perhaps not. Who knows. Sometimes a title is just a title and we shouldn’t read too much into it.

And to change gears I should also mention that I simply adore my new myTouch 3G and will be posting a personal review of it shortly. I still haven’t had a lot of time to play around with it but so far I am pleased with the Android platform and my favorite feature is GPS with the Google Maps, mainly because I am simple minded when it comes to things like that and it amuses me to no end.

Additionally, I am still tracking towards opening my own design studio here in Portland by summer.

I’m thinking about developing an iPhone or Android app called “Big Decision Maker”. This application will be aimed at middle managers employed by large corporations who are in need of a solid decision making tool. Rather than wasting valuable time looking at a problem or an issue and then developing a logical solution, you’d simply pull out your smartphone and launch Big Decision Maker. In mere seconds the application would spit out a decision for you. Any problem, large or small, solved in seconds. Thus leaving the up and coming manager with ample time to look busy or prepare for the big meeting. I’m not able to go into details at the moment, mainly because I have no programming skills and can’t actually begin to develop the app until I learn how to program. But I promise you that it will be a quality product and you’ll be happy to pay the nominal price of $59.99.

Furthermore, I cannot provide you with any specific launch date but in the meantime you can make a donation to me by using the donation button below. Any money donated to me will be used purely for personal expenses like cigarettes and alcohol so please do not think you are sending me money for any meaningful purpose. Still, I encourage you to be generous, as these are hard times and I can use the money.

There are many mysteries to be found in the world of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and today another one of these mysteries came to my attention. A friend and co-worker had mentioned today that he had written a review on the top 10 Android Apps for smartphones. This in and of itself was not curious but what he mentioned next caught my attention. Apparently he had posted this review to his blog and within a day, Google had crawled and indexed this page and it was already ranking quite highly in the search results for Android Apps. Arguably, Android Apps is a hot topic these days and it comes as no surprise that any content that makes mention of it would be picked up by the search engines. But it got me wondering. Does Google have either a special algorithm or human team that tracks hot topics and somehow manipulates search results containing them? Or was it simply good timing on the part of my friend and he just happened to post on a popular topic just prior to the regular crawl cycle with Google?

I jokingly mentioned that there may be a conspiracy involved here and to be perfectly honest I do not really believe there is any such conspiracy going on at Google to manipulate organic search. I chalk it up to being at the right place at the right time. Several new Android based smartphones have hit the market recently and there is a ton of interest in Android Apps so its no wonder that any site covering this trend would see a boost in traffic because of it. I’m just a little jealous because I am still rolling with a regular old Nokia cellphone and have not yet joined the ranks of the smartphone enabled human population.

Other Posts of Interest:
