Web Content Writing

August 24, 2010 by

Back in the day, when I was working for a little company named Yahoo, one of the worst questions I would get throughout the day was from angry and frustrated website owners wanting to know why they could not find their websites when they searched for themselves on Google, Yahoo and Bing.

The reason was fairly common and one quick glance at their website confirmed it.  Lack of relevant content.  What is relevant content?  First of all we need to clarify that IT IS NOT keywords.  Simply inserting a bunch of individual keywords into your site will not help bring you to page one of the search engines.  Okay, we should be clear on this one point, keywords are not relevant.

Each search engine is composed of a secret algorithm that very few people understand but what you need to understand is that every search engine has the same goal, to deliver relevant search results to a customer.  And in order to do this each search engine is constantly trawling the web for sites that it thinks best represent any given search by a human being.

Relevant content is simply the written information that appears on each page of a website.  There is no magic software or secret formula that you need in order to get your website into the first couple of pages of a search engine but you do need to make sure that when you put words onto a page of a website that the content is descriptive and relevant to whatever topic, service or product you are advertising.  For example, if you are a plumber and you want people to find you on Google when the sink is overflowing then you want to make sure that on your services page you write out that you handle residential issues and then provide a bit of detail on just what kind of residential services you offer.  It won’t hurt to also list the geographical area you cover.  Remember, a website can be searched for a visited from anyplace in the world and it won’t help someone in Chicago if you are located in Miami.

Web content writing is really advertising and marketing.  You want to provide details that will captivate and inform people.  The search engines want to return results that are pertinent to a keyword search and they will be scanning each page of your website for this relevant information so don’t be lazy and don’t think that one or two sentences will be enough.  Just look at this post.  I have provided several paragraphs of basic information on web content writing because I want the search engines to pick up on the fact that this page is about, you guessed it, web content writing.

I know that not everyone is a gifted writer so if you think that you are doomed to failure then do not fret.  The internet is filled with talented people such as myself who will gladly provide web content for a fee but if you are frugal or do not have the budget to pay someone to write for you then all you need to do is invest the time to search out the many free articles that can be found on the internet that will teach you to become a better writer.

Day 195: SEO and Keywords

June 24, 2010 by Mister Viddy

Does Google ever use the “keywords” meta tag in its web search ranking?

And Google replied, no.

And there you have it, keywords are not the magic beans that some “experts” would have you believe.  Content is king.  Plain and simple there is no way for you to avoid the fact that in order for your website to perform well in any search engine you must provide good, relevant page content.

SEO is not an exact science but there are plenty of search engine optimization experts that will sell you on all sorts of tricks that they claim will put you on page one of Google, Yahoo and Bing.  Do your research.  There is no easy fix when it comes to SEO but the web is filled with tons of good sites that will educate and enlighten.

Day 192: Twitter To Twitter

June 21, 2010 by Mister Viddy

Twitter is a fantastic tool for marketing your website because it forces you to convey your messages in 140 characters or less.  Some times too many words can hurt you when you are trying to focus your efforts on a specific agenda.  Hitting your potential target audience with a novel is not always the best way of influencing someone to visit your website.

So stay tuned as I offer up some free advice on making Twitter work for you.  Social media is only as good as your message and you can say a lot in under 140 characters.
